That night when the Emcee first drew me into the semi-darkness of the club, we ended up having a conversation that was serious, but not unbearable; intimate, but never intrusive; brief, but strangely deep.

And then he said to me, "You know, Herman, I find you quite funny."

That confused me to no end. Bewildered, I replied, "But I don't think there's anything funny about myself."

He paused and exhaled a plume of cigarette smoke. "Exactly," he said.
