How strange...today I saw the sun shine for about five minutes before the clouds obscured her again. I say it was strange because I squinted up at the sudden light, genuinely wondering where it was coming from.

I was coming home from the restaurant again last night (these repasts will soon be difficult to curb! I'm sure the Emcee will not be pleased if I show up for rehearsals as a tub of lard) when I decided to visit the neighborhood where I used to live, just before I came to work at the [livejournal.com profile] kit_kat_klub. I don't know why I went...I suppose the wanderlust had gotten a hold of me, as it does from time to time.

But the neighborhood...it was a bad sight. So bad that I feel both lucky and guilty at the same time, having left when I did. So much has changed in such a short time. The pawn shop that I used to live above is now boarded up. All the windows are broken. Nothing lives in it now, save the rats. The little bookstore I used to frequent is also abandoned...gutted by a fire. And not even the soot or the scraps of plywood could cover up the yellow paint.

Compared to there, this area is heaven.

There was a young, dark-haired girl...thirteen or fourteen years of age, at most...she was standing in the light of a streetlamp. She propositioned me. I gave her some money and told her to go feed her family, and she in turn gave me the oddest look. I had never seen a child look so old. I kept on walking.

Hopefully she saw the sun shine today. Even if it was just for five minutes.
